The Inertia

Photographer / Director Josh Soskin in front of the lens for once.

Photographer / Director Josh Soskin.

I’ve been surfing for over 20 years. No matter where I’ve lived or traveled, I’ve always had surfing as an outlet. It’s been something that’s personal and a bit sacred for me, as cliché as that sounds. Maybe that’s why I’m really delicate as far as how I depict it. I’ve avoided it almost entirely with my filmmaking work. With photography, I’ve been conscious of shooting stuff that I hope is a little unique in a world that’s wildly over-photographed. I’m not hanging with pros or shooting it every day so I don’t even attempt to get “surf porn”–big airs, massive tubes or whatever. There are guys doing that already and they do it really well. I’m more interested in the moments in between–what surfing is like for a guy like me who only gets to do it a few times a week and is usually faced with really crappy conditions. I guess it’s more the lifestyle element, but for me, it’s just what surfing is actually like. I find myself waiting a lot, letting my mind wander, focusing in on certain details. Most of the time, I’m not catching bombs or doing big airs and I guess my photography reflects that.
