A feeding frenzy off the Port Elizabeth coast in South Africa has officials warning beach goers to get out of the water. And stay out.
Algoa FM, an Eastern Cape radio station, reported early this morning that a whale carcass, floating about 300 meters offshore, is the reason for the surge in shark population. “Our lifesavers and beach office employees are currently dealing with it and monitoring the situation but we are appealing to bathers to stay clear of the water,” said Kupido Baron, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson. Officials are ordering surfers and swimmers out of the water at Kings Beach, Humewood, Hobie and Pollock beaches. There is no set time for people to return the water at the moment.
Until a safe return to the beach can be determined, beach goers are encouraged not to get in the water. The National Ports Authority, NSRI and the beach office are the entities that will decide when that time is.
