Michel Bourez won the REEF Hawaiian Pro on Sunday. He took home $40,000 and an early lead in the Vans Triple Crown of surfing. The 27-year-old finished up in strong form at Aa’li Beach Park on Oahu’s North Shore. The final four-man lineup was a global affair: Patacchia (HAW), Jeremy Flores (FRA), Michel Bourez (PYF), and a rarity in finals, Dion Atkinson (AUS).
In the final 35 minute heat of the REEF Hawaiian Pro 2013, Flores struck first with an 8.33. Bourez, not to be walked on, took the lead with a 9.4 full of powerful turns. By the 15 minute mark, he had the field combo-ed, and would keep it that way until the final eight minutes of the contest, when the local boy, Patacchia, nailed a 9.23. It was not enough.
This is Bourez’s second win at Haleiwa, with his fist coming in 2008.
The Vans World Cup of Surfing will be up and running between the 25th November and 6th December, 2013, at Sunset Beach.
