The Inertia

So the Quiky Pro at Snapper is now officially yesterday’s news. Stephanie Gilmore is officially the boss lady, and Gabriel Medina showed that he knows how to surf, once again. But you all knew that already. I spent a few mornings shooting the free surf sessions, and wanted to share the other side of the contest with you all.

Snapper Rocks is always crowded. Now add the photographers, WCT surfers, and all the up-and-coming grommets trying to get that photo, and top that with a bunch of kooks who probably should not be there when the pros are, and you have a good idea of how the mornings were before the heats started. There were a few injuries and several unnecessary drop-ins due to both arrogance and pure lack of understanding or skill. How would you feel if someone dropped in on you when you’re about to pull into a barreling four-foot Snapper wave?

These are a bunch of random little snaps from around the event. Rather than doing what 90% of the photogs do and just sitting on the beach with a long lens, I always try to see things from various angles, find different approaches to shooting, and capture more than just the top pros… hope you like ’em!
