From everything Doc Renneker once said about Ocean Beach, the legendary beachbreak at size is a Californian Teahupo’o. Fundamental differences exist, sure, but the dangers inherent in a place like Teahupo’o at size can mirror those of OB.
Among Northern California’s elite spots, Ocean Beach can pick up, and hold, some huge swell and funnel their oceanic reverberations down a series of long sandbars producing world-class barrels. When it’s on, OB is impossible not to stare at in wonderment. Its shape alone is mesmerizing, but add the sight of a surfer dropping in on the shoulder for scale, and it’s the ideal beach greeting.
