Surf and art. Art and surf. Both are incredibly expressive mediums, so it’s of little surprise that surfers and artists often share interests and perspectives — and even less of a surprise when surfers or artists are surfers and artists. Similarly, it’s of little surprise that Otis Carey and Cam Stynes charge. But did you know they also have a penchant for pushing their creative boundaries through art and music as well? According to “Fast Food” — a short film shot by one of my favorite surf photographers, Hayden O’Neill — they do. But then again, who doesn’t like a good show, art or music or otherwise, with good people? And while there is an exploration of this previously hidden pursuit, don’t think the video lacks in the way of surf; it doesn’t.

What is this all for? An app they’re behind. KIN is a new social platform intended to capture the collective mind and aspirations of “lovers and creators of art and music, the boarders and the travelers.” Basically, it is a medium to explore the world of surf, skate, snow, travel, art, and music through a communal and collaborative lens. How does it work? Imagine you’re traveling to a previously unvisited city or along a new stretch of coastline you’re relatively unfamiliar with. Want to connect with fellow surfers to go for, well, a surf, or perhaps go to a concert/art show later that evening? Log onto KIN and see who is in the area and, most importantly, shares your interests. Consider it a Facebook-meets-Foursquare-meets-Instagram (you’re able to post pictures as well), but made by and for surfers.

With free-thinkers like Carey and Cam on board, you know you’re in good company.
