The Mavericks Invitational is one of those events that goes off like a bomb. Between the ridiculously big waves that get thrown at Half Moon Bay, the intricacies (if you’re an insider) of the event’s inner-workings, and the camaraderie of the competitors make for one of the best shows in surfing right now. Mavericks is synonymous with both triumph and tragedy – it is one of big wave surfing’s most famous coliseums. A mere 24 hours before the event ran, the 24 invitees were given notice that they would put their lives on the line for the coveted northern California wave.
