I’m sure a lot of hard work and science went into this, and I probably shouldn’t be laughing so hard watching this video. But I can’t help it–this thing just looks hilarious… and fun.
After nearly 20 years of development, Dan Piazza and Rob Innes have created something pretty incredible. It’s a self-righting vehicle that uses a metal weight at the bottom and lightweight foam at the top to ensure that up remains up and down remains down, no matter what happens, similar to early models of the jet ski.
While it’s not considered a submarine, it can dive to around six feet for about 10 seconds, depending on pilot experience. Experienced drivers can keep it underwater for up to a minute, as the engine uses snorkels mounted on the fins to keep oxygen flowing. The US Coast Guard approved the machine for recreational use, and it can be registered just like any other inboard powerboat in most countries. So next time you’re trying to impress your buddies on the lake this summer, consider trying to find a sea breacher rather than an old ski boat. If you can afford the price tag, that is–most models go for anywhere from $80,000 to $100,000.
