Finding waves in some parts of Canada is like finding a needle in a haystack. To surf here, you need a boat, an airplane, a strong understanding of weather/swell patterns, and patience similar to that of a saint. This is because the overwhelming majority of Canada’s coast is extremely remote due to its inaccessibility and the simple fact that it’s colder than a witch’s titty on a brass broomstick. And even when all the tools available suggest suitable conditions, Mother Nature can throw a curve ball by delivering howling winds and pitiful surf.
To filmmaker Ben Gulliver, this is precisely what inspired A New Breed: Get Miles Away. To Ben, some places are too predictable. Wind and water temperatures are the same all year and crowds are irritating nuisances. “My goal is to document waves that are rarely seen. And usually they’re in cold and uncomfortable places.” Luckily for the film, the backbone (people) associated with the movie have those tools necessary to find waves. So check out Pete Devries and Noah Cohen clock in a few minutes of tube time in some frigid Canadian barrels.
