Leonardo Fioravanti surfs like a madman. The Italian powerhouse–right now, laid up with a busted back thanks to a Pipeline bomb–has an interesting story.
Italy hasn’t exactly produced a whole lot of incredible surfers–it’s not a surfing nation. “All my best friends growing up were playing soccer; they were playing basketball,” says Fioravanti. “Normal sports you would do in Italy. Where I was just in love with surfing.” But that love pushed him deeper and deeper into the ocean, until eventually, he found himself on the world stage in the best waves on the planet. But for Leo, it all comes down to one thing: family. “I wouldn’t be anywhere else without my family. I wouldn’t be doing this without my family… without them, I wouldn’t be anywhere.”
