Soft tops used to be the board for warm, boozy afternoons when the waves were small. It was a way of toning things down and pulling into some fun closeouts without fear of your board breaking, or even worse, severely injuring yourself. That all used to be true until guys like Jamie O’Brien started surfing massive Pipeline or when Chippa Wilson began to boost shove-its, air reverses, and ollies over rocks. Now you see these things being hucked onto dry sand at Waimea Shorebreak or facilitating an insane board transfer at the Wedge in Newport Beach. Here’s Catch Surf’s newest member, Chippa Wilson, going mad in proper head high surf.
