The Wave: Bristol is an interesting endeavor. It’s a man-made lake with a wave built in, surrounded by an education center, outdoor activities, and healthy food. In short, it’s a place to hang out, surf, and generally do things that are good for you and good fun. And it’s not on the ocean.
Created by Nick Houndsfield and a few other surf-savvy folks, The Wave uses Wavegarden technology. But as with any wave-making business, it costs a boatload of cash. That why The Wave: Bristol went to Richard Branson (yes, SIR Richard Branson) for a bit of extra spending money.
According to The Bristol Post, The Wave is in the running for Branson’s Pitch to Rich, an initiative set up by Branson along with Virgin. Pitch to Rich has three different categories: Start Up, Grow, and New Things, which all sound very similar. The Wave is entered in the Start Up division, and reached the finals.
“We decided to enter the Pitch to Rich competition because for many years we have been impressed with Richard and the Virgin Group’s passion for business but also commitment to the environment and social causes,” said Nick Hounsfield, project co-founder, to the Bristol Post.
Winners of the competition share £1 million prize, including advertising campaigns, cash investments, mentoring and support from Virgin.
