Update: The video has since been removed by the YouTube user. We speculate it had something to do with backlash from animal rights activists per the aggressive nature with which the diver interacted with the gray whales; but that is merely speculation.
…
This would have scared me shitless. No lie. (Even though I don’t know why I would ever lie about that.) But seriously — SHITLESS. Imagine diving back down into a sea of kelp on a brief spearfishing expedition and suddenly seeing two huge bodies slowly moving beneath you. Yep… poop, loose.
Sure, gray whales are magnificent, but the surprise alone of being that close in proximity to massive mammals would be enough to set me free of my bowel movements. 30 feet off Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles is not where you expect to run into such animals.
And then there is the diver’s adamance to quite literally chase after the gray whales in this incessant need to touch one of them. Think about it: you’re a gray whale with its calf and all of a sudden this camouflaged creature shoots out of the kelp with a very pointy thing (speargun) in hand; would you play calm and carry on?
