The Inertia

Every autumn, grey whales make their way south from their summer feeding grounds in the Arctic to their winter birthing and mating grounds in Baja California, Mexico.

When they start showing up, boats full of tourists motor out to watch–but it’s rare to have an experience like the one in the video above.

In early February, a mother and her calf decided that they wanted to say hello to the boat, much to the delight of the tourists. While a drone hovered above, the boaters reached out and petted the heads of both the mother and her calf.

Stories like this just go to show that captive animals aren’t necessary to impress us–in fact, seeing these beautiful creatures in the wild is much more impressive.
