They’re always out there, you just don’t always see them. This drone footage, shot in Central California, is a reminder of that fact. With Mick’s encounter/attack/face off/boxing match taking the world by storm, a slew of attacks off the Carolina coast, and Reunion Island attacks all staying in our newsfeed, it seems the only time we’ve been able to acknowledge sharks lately is when they’re terrorizing something or somebody. A recent article published by MTV is proof enough that shark infatuation is a full blown pop culture phenomenon right now. In the article, Ralph S. Collier, Founder and President of the Shark Research Committee, articulates the idea many of us have been catching onto for a while now – it’s not so much that there are more sharks, we’re just able to see them more often. Stand Up Paddleboarders, more people surfing, an action cam lugged around by a fraction of every lineup, and tourists walking along piers with cell phone cameras ready to fire like loaded guns are just a few reasons we’re all seeing more sharks. And that’s all without touching on the fact that drones have the best view of it all. And drones are everywhere.
Here, we see a pretty sizable shark casually cruising the Pismo Beach lineup. He (or she) clearly has no interest in bothering nearby surfers, no matter how close they get. Everybody goes about their business and the books close on another day. You’ve probably been just as close, if not closer to one of these awesome creatures more than once without having the drone footage to remind you of it.
