Growing up in Hawai'i in the late 60s, Mike Harrelson was introduced to the haole-boy school of hard knocks and taught the tribal power of aloha. He then lived on the Outer Banks of North Carolina before a five-year stint as an Oxnard semi-local where he worked for Patagonia. While raising his boys, he spent a two years on the Big Island of Hawaii, giving them waterboy/keiki o paniau foundations. Though Montana-based for many years, he's chased waves from Tonga to Hossegor and does regular bumps down to Mex and Central America. During his early years with Patagonia, he served two terms on the then-fledgling Surfrider Foundation board of directors.
