Drones are about as ubiquitous as the iPhone. And we had to imagine there would a be a tipping point somewhere in the near future. How long before they dominated our air space before it was time for hobbyists and videographers to turn their remote controlled fixations elsewhere? Apparently that time has come. Drones will be joining you in the lineup to compliment their airborne predecessors sooner rather than later.
The OpenROV Trident is a remote control drone designed to carry out its video shenanigans and exploration underwater. The idea is fresh enough that the OpenROV team has raised more than twelve times its fundraising goal of $50,000 on Kickstarter with over three weeks left on the clock. If that’s any indicator of whether or not underwater drones will take off in popularity their current fundraiser serves as a good gauge.
According to the campaign page the Trident will retail for $1,199. It’s small enough to fit in a backpack or underneath the seat of an airplane. It’s able to dive to a depth of 100m, sending video back to the videographer through a neutrally buoyant tether. And with three years of development in the can already, the Trident’s release is set for November 2016.
“(Insert wave name here) From Above” edits are so summer 2014. Get with the times. “(Insert wave name here) From Below” is the new hip thing.
