I’m… Ron Burgundy? Better believe it, ’cause Fox Sports went out, corralled themselves a couple Noa Deane types, including precocious if garrulous Noa Deane — this has to be part of his Un-F*cking the WSL apology tour; is that still a thing? – and laid claim to surfing. We’re not merely talking about the competitive circuit. Nope. We’re talking about Surfing with a capital S.
Really embracing their new role as the Australia’s exclusive provider of all things WSL, they’re making it known that they’re not going to play the part of dorky, disconnected dad. Instead, they somehow (read: MONEY alongside athlete’s contractual obligations to WSL) convinced Deane, Julian Wilson, Kolohe Andino, and brand-spanking-new world champ Gabriel Medina to raise the flag and with it public perception/profile, effectively vouching for their dorky, disconnected dad, or likely uncle in this case.
What’s the underlying or potentially thematic message we’re supposed to walk away with? I have no frickin’ idea. Perhaps: carry a big stick? Whatever it is, don’t sweat it, and definitely don’t waste time getting your panties in a bunch about the continued commercialization of surf, blah, blah, blah. Simply enjoy what surfing there is in the advertisement and move on to the next edit.
