Could we see Sea Shepherd’s Steve Irwin chasing down illegal driftnet vessels on Animal Planet’s new show? It sure would be cool if we did.

The Inertia

At first glance, a reality TV series about ocean conservation might not seem like the most exciting programming under the sun. But name the show “Ocean Warriors” and we’ll know you’re working with something here. That’s the title of a brand new Animal Planet series with executive producers Robert Redford and Paul Allen, set to premier on the cable network December 4. Its focus will be on revealing crime and violence that goes unpunished across international waters.

“The challenge of restoring ocean health has never been more urgent,” Allen said about the new series. “Our oceans are complex living systems that help feed millions, mitigate climate change and even yield lifesaving medicines.”

The series will follow activists, scientists and journalists who are battling for the ocean’s health against illegal poachers and organized crime. It covers everything from tuna fisheries in the Western Pacific to chasing down icefish poachers off the coast of West Africa and photographer Paul Hilton’s campaign to save the Pacific shark population.

Now that sounds cool.
