The Inertia

We didn’t even know a surfboard binding could exist unless its sole purpose was to tow you in to waves 99% of the surf population wouldn’t look at. You thought so too, don’t lie. It turns out somebody had the creativity to take magnets, attach them to a board and our feet, and encourage us to let ‘er rip. It’s called the FUEGZ Magnetized Binding System, and the previous sentence pretty much describes how this thing works – a system that doesn’t require you to stay completely strapped onto your board. It claims to create up to 180 lbs. of magnetic force between a surfer and their board, making pumping, landing aerials and more acrobatic maneuvers uniquely “stable”. According to a Surf Liberation, Inc (SLi) press release, “The ‘720’ is a moment away and the ‘900’ is not far behind. ”

SLi, the New Jersey based company behind the invention, says the foot binding clicks into place on a magnetic strip when you pop up, and can release at will or in case of a fall. The two part binding system is composed of a foot strap and a magnetic strip that adheres to your board, much like a traction pad.
