Writer/Surfer

When Malcolm and Duncan Campbell pioneered their three-fin (and later five-fin) design in the early ’70s, they likely had no idea it’d slip through the cracks. Simon Anderson developed his own tri-fin design years later, called it the thruster, and, well, you know the rest. But, in recent years the ride-anything trend has spawned new interest in the design.

Alternative craft enthusiasts like Alex Knost, Ellis Ericson, Tyler Warren, and others have contributed to this resurgence – culminating in an art show last week curated by Knost himself. It’s inspiring when surfers want to push the limits of modern design, and even more inspiring when, after 45 years, innovators are recognized for their contributions to surf history and board design.

‘The Bonzer’ will be on view through April 8th at the Costa Mesa Conceptual Art Center. And check out more from RVCA on Vimeo.
