Carlos Gauna has a lot of shark footage. Terabytes, I’ll bet. He spends much of his time flying a drone outfitted with a high-definition camera, flying low over the coast of California. Recently, he decided he’d put together a sort of highlight reel, and it is stunning, to say the least.
“Over the years, I’ve spent thousands of hours observing and filming great white sharks and the marine life that surrounds them. Along the way, I’ve captured encounters, behaviors, and moments that I never could have anticipated,” Gauna explains. “This film brings together some of my favorite footage, presented without narration. Just the imagery and music, allowing these incredible animals and their world to speak for themselves.”
Generally, Gauna includes an educational voice-over in his films. He’s quick to acknowledge that he’s not formally trained in shark behavior, but he’s spent enough time watching sharks — great whites in particular — that he’s pretty damn educated.
“I’m NOT a marine biologist,” he writes. “As with all YouTube content, I encourage independent verification of facts via official scientific and trustworthy sources. I will strive to post citations for any information I discuss here whenever possible. My goal is to use photography and drones to bring awareness to wildlife and the nature around us. I welcome collaborations with scientists to bring cinematic elements to the educational presentation.”
A big part of Gauna’s mission is to change the way the general public thinks about sharks. They can be dangerous, yes, but we’re far more dangerous to them than they are to us.
“My hope is that this film gives you a different perspective on great white sharks and a greater appreciation for the natural world we share with them,” he continues. “For the best experience, watch in 4K on the largest screen you can, with headphones or good speakers.”
