The Inertia

The final touches are being laid down at Surf Snowdonia, the world’s first ever commercial Wavegarden surf park. With the grand opening of the artificial wave pool set for August 1st, filling up the actual lagoon with water seems to be the final seal on what has been years in the making. Surf Snowdonia completed that process this week and now artificial waves are a real-life commodity. It was reported not too long ago that the park was being built on an abandoned industrial site for scrap aluminum, and even the process of bringing water to the inland park is proving to be an eco-friendly endeavor.

The lagoon, which is the size of six soccer pitches, will not only pump out barreling waves 365 days a year, it will also help to power 20,000 homes. Thanks to passing fill water running through a nearby hydroelectric station, the park will generate electricity. Rainwater is abundant in North Wales, with a typical annual fall of 2,000 – 3,000 mm. That water will then be drawn from Llyn Cowlyd, North Wales’ deepest lake, through the hydroelectric station at Dogarrog and into the lagoon. It’s a process that will fill Surf Snowdonia’s lagoon with 33,000 cubic meters of recycled rainwater before it’s cleaned by a UV disinfectant and filtration system at the park.
