The Inertia

Chance encounters with marine wildlife of the friendlier sort (e.g. not sharks, crocs, or killer whales) are an added benefit of frequenting the ocean. Seeing dolphins, for example, during a session always adds an extra layer of appreciation for Mother Nature. That goes double for whales – especially when they pop up right next to you.

Recently, California State Lifeguard Derek Savoie decided to take a lifeguard paddleboard out for a spin at Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu and received a surprise visit from a passing Grey Whale. His face in the video says it all.

“This Grey Whale either didn’t see me sitting in the kelp on my paddle board or was just very curious and came up to check me out,” said Savoie. “Either way it was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life. You should never approach these beautiful mammals in the wild. I was just out for a paddle and saw them coming and luckily had my Go Pro on me and just sat there and they passed literally right underneath me. My foot dangling in the water even made contact with his/her head! Mind blowing experience and one I will never forget.”
