The Inertia

Did you know that the ocean makes up about 70 percent of our planet? And did you also know that more than eighty percent of it is un-mapped, unobserved, and unexplored? When one takes that into account, it makes sense that we would occasionally stumble upon creatures we’ve never seen before—in fact, one would think it would happen far more often than it does. According to the Daily Mail, the weird thing you see in the video above was found in the Kien Giang province of Vietnam in late July.

A local tour guide named Du Man Du stumbled upon the creature. “I don’t know whether it’s an animal, vegetation or something else,” he said. After bystanders marveled at a prime example of nature’s weirdness, it was released back into the sea from whence it came.

Although many outlets are reporting that it’s an unidentified species, there are a few theories. The most likely of them calls the animal a basket starfish, which are generally found in the deep sea. It consists of a central body that can measure about five inches with a series of arms that can reach to nearly 30 inches.

Whatever the thing is, it’s an interesting look into a world we know next to nothing about.
