The Inertia

When I woke up this morning, I didn’t realize that today, my life would change forever. Now, nothing can or will ever be the same again. Just kidding. It’s only an avocado doughnut, but hey, as a health editor and avocado lover, it’s still pretty significant news.

But yes, the avocado doughnut is out there. Created by Doughnut Plant in New York City, the savory doughnut has already acquired a number of dedicated fans and a plethora of trendy Instagrams.

Apparently the doughnut is savory, rather than sweet, and it tastes like avocado toast on steroids. Doughnut Plant makes the doughnut by creating rectangular doughpods out of sesame seed dough, stuffing the doughpods with avocado, and frying the whole thing in olive oil. So yes, it’s not healthy, but it might be just a smidge better for you than a sugary, chocolate doughnut.

Plus, the avocado doughnut even caught the eye of the New York Times today, so it really must be as good as it looks. Now, it’s only a matter of time before some LA bakery/juicery/organic doughnut shop develops their own way to incorporate the creamy fruit into some kind of pastry.
