The Inertia

Ever apply heaps of sunscreen only to later find a burning crimson patch you failed to grease up? Through the wonders of technology, you can avoid the red stripe down the nose forever.

Here’s your ticket: A doohickey called Sunscreenr. Though it looks like a sex toy, it’s not. It’s a gadget that lets you see where sunscreen has been applied and where it has not. Look through the viewfinder and skin covered with sunscreen will appear darker than exposed skin (this does work with dark skin though the distinction may be subtler). It works because of a special lens and light-filtering system that removes all light except ultraviolet.

You can look at your newly-greased friend and inform them they forgot to slather their earlobes. Or press the record button, point the device at yourself, record up to 30 seconds of footage, then peer through the viewfinder to see if you’ve missed any areas.

If you use a zinc sunscreen, it’s much easier to see which areas are protected with the naked eye. But lots of surfers and other sun-loving people use chemical sunscreens on exposed areas below the neck, even if sporting a mask of zinc on their mug.

The 3-ounce gadget is waterproof, dust-proof, durable and holds a charge for up to two days. It’s makers have raised over $150,000 on crowd-funding sites, more than two-and-a-half times the target amount.

It can be yours for $74 on Kickstarter, available only in purple, or $93 on Indiegogo with your choice of several colors.
