It’s been an unusually hot and snow-less winter. For many, this simply means forgoing exorbitantly expensive ski passes, in favor of pursuing other hobbies. For others, though, that simply means it’s time to get creative. Inspiration for those daring few may come from former U.S. Air Force pilot Johnny Cruz Buckingham, who recently claimed the Guinness World Record for fastest towed asphalt skiing.
Buckingham’s attempt took place last August on a pre-measured flat track (read: a parking lot). There, he was towed behind a car at increasing speeds, until he was measured by a radar gun, then let go and safely skied off to the side to avoid the parked cars at the end of his path. When all was said and done, his fastest attempt was a blistering 69 mph.
“I want to inspire my child, Hurricane Thomas Buckingham, to set big goals and reach for the stars,” he told Guinness. “This record is for you, Champ!”
Surprisingly, this is far from Buckingham’s first record. According to his Instagram, Johnny holds 23 world records overall, five of which have been earned since the asphalt skiing stunt. Those include: the most fire knife spins on a balance board in one minute, the most catches of a medicine ball wearing boxing gloves by a pair in one minute, the fastest time to burst 100 balloons with the feet, the fastest time to travel to all New York City Ferry stops, and the most fire knife spins in 30 seconds.
