The Inertia

Yet another group of European skiers has been caught in an avalanche. In the wake of news that heavy snowfall in the Alps has led to avalanche warnings, resort closures, and deaths, a French resort-goer captured a video of three more skiers being engulfed in snow.

The slide occurred around noon on Tuesday at La Flégère, a ski area in Chamonix, located in the French Alps just north of Mont Blanc. In a video taken at the top of the Floria ski lift, witnesses look on in horror as a wall of snow engulfs three skiers. As the Daily Mail reports, the victims were buried up to their necks, but eventually retrieved safely.

The incident occurs amid unusually heavy snowfall and an accompanying glut in avalanches. Storm Nils dumped 24-40 inches of snow on the region, prompting the French national weather service to issue a red alert for avalanche risk across the southeastern Savoie region and multiple resorts to close all or part of their runs. Soon after, three skiers were killed in an avalanche that swept away six people at Val d’Isere, another resort in the French Alps.
