The Jackson Hole community is stepping up for local ripper Bryce Newcomb.
Bryce Newcomb, a gifted skier based out of Jackson Hole was standing over his line in Cody Bowl in the backcountry near Jackson Hole Resort last week when the cornice he was on collapsed, sending him plummeting a thousand feet into the cirque below. He was airlifted to a hospital in Idaho and has been there since, according to reports.
He’s apparently fighting for his life with a severe brain injury, breathing on his own while still “unresponsive.” “We are praying for a miraculous recovery from Bryce and appreciate all the love and support that has been coming his way,” his brother, Cole Newcomb, told the Jackson Hole News and Guide. “We are so incredibly grateful to everyone in the Jackson community for their incredible support and rallying yells.”
The greater snow riding community has stepped up with an online fundraiser, raising over $90,000 for Newcomb, who was born in Sun Valley but now lives in Jackson Hole.
Newcomb–an experienced backcountry skier–had apparently skied the line above Cody the week before. But new cornices had formed since, according to friends. No one saw Newcomb fall that day but heard yelling and quickly climbed and skied to his aid. He was unconscious, with scratches on his face. His friends surmise his helmet may have come off as he had yet to buckle it. He suffered no broken bones, only the serious head injury.
The local community has also stepped up big time with proceeds from the sales of ski DVDs produced by Storm Show Studios (who Newcomb filmed with often) being sold at an end of season party, today.
A fundraiser will also go off Friday in Jackson Hole, dubbed “Have a Bryce Day!”, at the Jackson Elks Lodge with an auction, cash bar and t-shirt sales. The Jackson community is certainly throwing down to help one of its own.
