Should this count as the last snowfall of the 2025-2026 winter, or is it the first of the 2026-2027 season? Just two months ago, Banff Sunshine Village reopened for a short stint of summer skiing thanks to a historic snowfall total in ’25-’26. The resort saw new snowfall just a few weeks ago too, but that was nothing more than the light offseason dusting that teases us all every once in a while. This weekend though, several resorts in Canada saw more than a dusting — significant enough that we can safely call it the first snowfall of a new season.
Banff Sunshine, Alberta, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, and Panorama Mountain Resort, British Columbia, all saw notable snow accumulation above 7,500 feet. The first is set to open for the new season in just two months, while the others aren’t expected to begin their seasons until early December. All three shared messages about the offseason snowfall that touched on a similar sentiment: “This has us excited for winter.”
“First snow has entered the chat,” Kicking Horse announced. “A few more bike laps? Absolutely,” and, “One foot in summer, one foot in winter. We’ll take it.”

Images from Sunshine Village on Sunday showed lift platforms that looked like they were navigating a full winter storm. An update from the resort on Monday morning shared a few more images from around the mountain, including The Dive, Goat’s Eye, and Standish.
Meanwhile, the crew at Panorama couldn’t help but note the irony of the weekend’s snowfall: it all came just in time for the last day(s) of summer operations.
