The Inertia

Every year, skiers and snowboarders perish when they fall into tree wells and suffocate. There were recently deaths in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Whitefish, Montana. Tree wells are the deep cavern created by overhanging branches where less snow falls next to a tree’s trunk. If you slide into them from the wrong angle after a fall, you’re going to need help from a buddy to get out (that’s why it’s always good to ski and ride with friends). Skier Chris Davenport filmed this quick tutorial several years ago with CMH Monashees and it definitely still rings true.
