Boom, Outdoor Research! Love it when you get spicy with your tents and drybags and crampons and such. Or in this case, with climbing athletes. OR, a label with a really solid heritage in the outdoor world recently took it to one of the country’s most storied men’s fashion rags after a photoshoot showed up in GQ using climbing athletes that looked just a teensy, weensy bit silly.
The male climbers, like Jimmy Chin, Sam Elias and Daniel Woods showcased $3,000 sweaters that totally have a place in the climbing world. If you’re trying to get a quick crack climb in before the art show. The women in the shoot–not sure if they’re climbers–wore things just as expensive, that covered a lot less skin. So OR took matters into its own art department, no doubt scouring the rich trove of second-hand shops in the Seattle area to make it happen.
Check out the two side-by-side: Here’s the GQ version and the OR version.
Climbing has obviously seen an uptick lately and GQ is just following, well, style. What’s in. But OR shot back, spoofing the title and captions. GQ‘s header: We Took Fall’s Crunchiest Designer Clothes Rock Climbing in Joshua Tree National Park. And OR’s take: We Took Fall’s Crunchiest Designer Clothes To Watch Ladies Rock Climbing In Vantage, WA
The captions were the raddest because of OR’s designer collection of second-hand goods (and the Rainier beer). One GQ caption reads: Jimmy Chin, Adventure Visionary: Vest, $3,395, (similar style) Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci / Sweater, $3,295, by Valentino / Hat, $135, PS by Paul Smith / Bag by Black Diamond, while the similar OR caption goes: Vest from Goodwill Thrift Store ($5). Tank from International Climbers Festival (complimentary).

Not quite the same angle, but you get it. Photo: OR
Friendly shots fired. Don’t expect OR to get a discount on advertising in GQ in the near future. Something tells me they’re not worried. Here’s the guys, with a little GQ‘d story telling:
