We still have a long way to go before winter arrives. In fact, autumn just kicked off this week. But some resorts in Colorado are already seeing the first significant snowfall of the new season this week. But like I mentioned, we technically haven’t arrived at that new season yet.
A little bit of autumn dusting or even some light snowfall in summer months isn’t unheard of, of course, but a recent storm in the Rockies just dropped more than just a dusting on resorts in Colorado. According to Snowbrains, the highest reported snowfall total as of Monday came from Winter Park, which recorded six inches. The resort had some fun with it and shared a video of two skiers showing up in full gear, ready to get their first lines.
“We have early ups,” they say fresh off the gondola.
“It’s September. It’s way too early for that.”
A tour through social media shows plenty of other resorts in the Centennial State leaning into the beautiful offseason storm. Arapaho Basin pointed out that this year’s first day of fall looked more like the first day of winter. Images from Beaver Creek looked like the resort is primed and ready to start running snow-making machines (even if this snow will probably be melted off before we know it). But the most striking images of this week’s storm likely came from Aspen Snowmass, which really drove in the stark, beautiful contrast that comes with the beginning of autumn, and the start of a long winter.
“Pinch us—is this real life or just autumn in the Rockies?”
