The Inertia

The Evermore family features kids who sport some of the raddest names you’re going to come across. There’s Sam Adventure Evermore, Sylvan Lightyear Evermore, Blaze Wilder Evermore, and then there’s the “wildest” of the four boys, according to his own parents, Joey Danger Evermore. For a family who abides by the rule that each boy is asked to “climb something every day,” you can imagine that being the “wildest” of the bunch is no small thing.

One bullet point on young Joey’s resumé for maintaining that title is beating out his older brother as the youngest person to ever climb Yosemite’s El Capitan. Funny enough, he snatched the record from his older brother, Sam, who had held the title since 2022 when he climbed the same peak at eight years old. It’s an accomplishment the Evermore clan crossed off together while celebrating Joey’s seventh birthday thousands of feet above sea level.

“A bunch of fans came to the valley just to sing him happy birthday. We could hear it loud and clear even though it was a mile away,” the family shared on social media last week. “Joey is gaining so much more than a record. He’s got a new identity. I can see his confidence building. I can’t wait for you all to hear about his adventures from him. He’s definitely the wildest boy of our bunch.”

“I was super hungry. (I) didn’t have much water,” the record holder says about getting to the top.

And when asked if there’s a rivalry between him and older brother Sam now that he’s beaten his record, Joey simply says, “Yeah.” According to their father, one-upping his older brother was why he wanted to climb El Cap for his seventh birthday. “When he saw Sylvan do it, he started talking about it constantly.”

The rope ascent took six days to complete, which makes the feat sound even more grueling and tiresome. But for a family that “trades pull-ups for screen time” at home, you can imagine that six days on stone feels like an average family getaway.
