Winter has already come in big in parts of the high country, especially in the Pacific Northwest (see La Nina). So this terrifying avalanche caught on POV camera is a great reminder to be avalanche savvy this winter.
According to the video description on YouTube, Victor Casajuana and Arturo Sanz were caught in this slide in the mountains of Andorra. “Victor and Arturo were deciding what route to take when suddenly a big slab of snow began sliding down, catching the two skiers and dragging them downhill,” it reads. “Arturo was hit by a tree’s branches during the slide, but luckily the avalanche stopped a few moments after and both skiers found themselves uninjured.”
Two of the best resources for backcountry riders are Avalanche.org, which features lists of North American avalanche centers, education opportunities, and accident reports, and Know Before You Go, a free online avalanche awareness program. Be prepared, be humble, make good decisions. Have fun.
