The Inertia

This piece of pavement and dirt is a tiny, single-lane road weaving through the Himalayan foothills of Himachal Pradesh, a northern state in India smack dab in the middle of the biggest mountain range in the world. In this region, trails are actually safer than roads (sadly, a recent bus crash in the region killed at least 23 school children when the bus careened off a cliff into a gorge).

When the monsoons hit here in the fall or spring snow melt starts, every creek and river fills up to raging levels. Waterfalls appear where there was once only dry creek bed, and roads like this become hazards to your health.
