The Inertia

March was a disaster in Mammoth Lakes. April was not. An average March at the Eastern Sierra resort typically sees snowfall totals in the ballpark of about six feet, but this time around they were given just one inch. That’s not a typo. Meanwhile, April snowfall totals average between two to three feet, and this season Mammoth Mountain recorded 48 inches at the main lodge and a solid 76 inches at the summit.

It’s been a weird second season for the Eastern Sierra resort, but the massive turnaround in April was surely a welcome one. It allowed Mammoth to stick to its announcement earlier in the year that lifts would be spinning through at least Memorial Day. Even now, “through Memorial Day” is the only date they’ll share when asked about the end of the season, leaving the door open for a season that extends into June (closing day was June 15 in 2025).

The snowfall total, while not a mind blowing number, nearly cracked the top ten (12th overall) for snowiest Aprils in the resort’s history. Images throughout the month show a place that looks like it just came out of a solid winter, not one of the warmest Sierra Nevada winters on record.
