The Inertia

The search continues for a missing hiker in the Lake Tahoe area. For over a week, a massive search effort has taken place in the Desolation Wilderness in El Dorado County, California.

The missing man has been identified as Jason Coughran. The 60-year-old hiker is described as a 6-foot-2, 150-pound white man with an “athletic build.” He was last heard from on May 25, when he entered Desolation Wilderness from the Fallen Leaf Lake area.

The search for Coughran began in the Fallen Leaf Lake and Angora Peak area, but has since expanded significantly. Over the weekend, almost 200 search and rescue personnel were assigned to the search, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. The rescue effort was later scaled back, but El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Sergeant Kyle Parker told ABC 10 that 11 “highly skilled searchers” have remained in the wilderness to continue searching specific areas.

The terrain of Desolation Wilderness has been the greatest challenge to searchers, as Parker continued. “There’s some steep canyons, some high peaks, everything in between… some of the brush that grows up there is head height. If somebody was down on the ground, they may be missed. It’s essentially searching for that proverbial needle in the haystack,” he said. Those challenges were further compounded by a storm system that moved in to the area, which made using search aircraft extremely difficult.
As the search continues, authorities are asking any members of the public who may have seen Coughran to contact the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office with any information they may have.
