The Inertia

A mountain lion was spotted wandering around the streets of San Francisco. A day later, it was safely captured by authorities.

The animal was first spotted Monday afternoon, in the Pacific Heights neighborhood, according to an alert from the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management. The public was advised that if they encountered the beast, to slowly back away, not run away from it, then call animal control. According to KRON4, Animal control closed nearby Lafayette Park as they conducted a search, but it was eventually reopened when they found no sign of the cat.

San Francisco Animal Care and Control found the mountain lion around 6:20 a.m. Tuesday. Officials managed to corner the animal in a courtyard between two apartment buildings and subsequently tranquilized it. Soon after, it was removed from the area in a crate.

One Reddit user described coming face to face with the mountain lion on the way home from a bar. “Early this morning while getting dropped off by a friend I witnessed a majestic mountain lion trotting down my block and up the steps to a corridor next to my apartment,” they wrote. “It was HUGE! Must have weighed 100+ pounds, and when on all fours, it was about 2/3 the height of the compost bin. I named it Jumanji, and this sighting will now be my entire personality.”

Authorities believe the animal is around a year old, and found itself in the city after becoming lost. California Department of Fish and Wildlife stated they will assess the animal’s health, before collaring and releasing it into the wild at an as-yet undetermined location.
