The Inertia

Sean Pollard was surfing alone in early October 2014, when he was attacked by what authorities now believe was a pair of sharks near Wylie Bay Beach in Esperance, Western Australia. The sharks didn’t kill him but they came close. He lost his right hand and left arm nearly up to his shoulder as well as an incredible amount of blood, barely surviving.

But he will be defined by his willingness to fight on. To take the place of surfing, he discovered snowboarding and is now competing at the Paralympic level this week in South Korea. On Monday, the 26-year-old missed the quarter-finals by .13 seconds. The Australian competes in the Banked Slalom Friday.
