A Polish skier has died after being caught in an avalanche at an Italian resort. The fatal slide occurred right next to a ski area and was caught on camera (below).
The avalanche occurred Monday afternoon on the Presena Glacier, near the Tonale Pass, at around 8,860 feet. According to the Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service (CNSAS), two Polish skiers were riding just off a marked route, when an avalanche triggered and carried one of them down a narrow gully within skiing distance of the groomed slope. As TVP World reports, the skier’s brother managed to escape the slide unharmed and immediately began desperately attempting to dig him out.

Meanwhile, nearby skiers and soldiers from Italy’s Alpine troops raised the alarm. In response, the regional emergency center dispatched a helicopter carrying a medical team and an avalanche dog.
“When rescuers arrived, the victim’s brother had already managed to find him and clear his airway, but it was immediately clear that the boy was in very serious condition,” local councilor Andrea Zampatti told Italian newspaper La Republica.
The skier was pulled from the snow and airlifted to a nearby hospital, but died shortly after arrival. Police have opened an investigation into the accident.
