The Inertia

The year 2021 has been off to an interesting start. Incredible swells for Hawai’i and the West Coast, and now more snow in the forecast for the end of this week than California has seen all year. And to start all off, Malibu, Southern California’s most historic surf enclave, even received a rare dusting of snow. A massive storm system is setting up to drop multiple feet on resorts in Lake Tahoe and the rest of the Sierras over Wednesday and Thursday. Models are a bit divided on how things will pan out, but we could be looking at anywhere from three to eight feet of snow across California.

Some snowfall should be widespread across the U.S., too, but it looks like the deep stuff will be concentrated in the Sierras, with southern Sierra resorts such as Kirkwood and Mammoth scoring the most. Mammoth especially will be grateful for the mid-season dump that will more than double its season total. The Mammoth website reads only 66 inches for the season thus far, and the more promising forecasts suggest 113 inches over the next five days. Time to break out the snorkels?

In other strange news, snow fell in Malibu for the first time in a while. It was no more than a dusting, but an extreme contrast to the 80-degree weather recorded down south last week.
