Family and friends of Sheryl Powell breathed a sigh of relief on Monday when, after an exhaustive four-day search, she was found alive and subsequently taken to a local hospital for medical clearance. Officials say the Huntington Beach, California resident was found in an area just below where the family’s missing dog was located earlier Monday morning.
“Missing hiker, Sheryl Powell, was located alive by ground search team members near the Montenegro Springs area (below where her dog was located earlier today),” explained the Inyo County Sheriff in a Facebook post. “Searchers describe her as resilient and strong but exhausted after being lost in an extremely remote area above Big Pine, Calif. Mrs. Powell was met at the Bishop Airport by ambulance and will be taken to the local hospital for medical clearance.”
According to ABC7, Powell strayed from her campsite to find a place to use the restroom when a man thought to be hiding out chased her down the hill wielding a knife. Powell thought the man was chasing her. She traveled at night to avoid dehydration and managed to find water and cactus to eat, but grew utterly exhausted until she was found on Monday.
Powell’s husband, Joe, had refused to leave the campsite since his wife disappeared on Friday. They’ve been married 42 years and have spent decades playing in the outdoors together.
