A skier died at Mammoth Mountain last week after a fall down the resort’s infamous Dropout 2. The accident marks the fourth death at Mammoth this winter.
“At approximately 1:00 p.m., Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol dispatch received a report of a guest who had suffered a severe fall while skiing in Dropout 2, an expert’s only chute located off the top of Chair 23. Patrol arrived on scene at 1:04 p.m. and found the guest unconscious and non-responsive. Life-saving care was administered immediately, and the guest was quickly transported to the care of paramedics, who provided continued care en route to Mammoth Hospital,” a statement from the resort said over the weekend. “Despite these efforts, we are informed the guest passed away. Further details can be obtained from the Mono County Sheriff/Coroner. Notification of next of kin is still pending.”
At least one person on Reddit claimed to have seen the fall and shared details. They estimate the skier lost both skies near the top of the drop-in point and hit their head on a rock. From that point, the skier slid feet first unconscious at least another 150 feet. They also noted that another skier was with the victim and attempted to ski after them through much of the fall.
In December, Mammoth ski patroller Cole Murphy was caught in an avalanche while doing mitigation work. the day after Christmas. He passed away within days. His passing was the second patroller death at Mammoth Mountain in 2025. The previous day, a skier known as “Every Day Ray” died. And on January 16, 2026, a snowboarder died at Mammoth from a head injury, according to the LA Times.
