The Inertia

What would you do for your favorite thing? Would you run through fire for perfect waves? Walk on hot coals for pristine powder? What if your favorite thing was cheese? Would you tumble down a steep hillside, racing others in pursuit of the same stinky, rolling ball of milk? Well, if you were into that, this is what might happen. A carnage carnival for all of us to gawk at.

The Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling Race is a bizarre phenomenon that takes place each year in Gloucestershire in the southwest of England. A perfectly good wheel of Double Gloucestershire cheese is rolled innocently down a steep embankment. And then hundreds of people try to beat it down the hill. First one down takes the…cheese.

It’s a simple contest that dates back to the 1800s. But then massive carnage follows. Case in point: this year’s men’s winner suffered a torn calf muscle.
