Editor’s Note: Photographers and their lifestyles (and subsequent adventures) never cease to enthrall us. So we make a point of telling their stories as often as possible. Or let them tell their stories for us. This is how one skier made it by chasing her dreams.
Photography came into my life through skiing. Growing up with Whistler in my backyard, I was on skis at age two and was on the hill every waking moment. I started bringing my camera along just for something fun to do for a high school photography assignment, and things progressed quickly from there.
Whistler is an amazing place to call home, but the storm systems seem to hit as soon as I board the plane to leave on a trip, which is pretty amusing. Despite it being a hard place to leave, I have now become interested in traveling the world looking to ski new places, in countries I have never been before. A highlight of this season was traveling to Austria and getting to ski in Europe for the first time after being invited to the Nine Queens event in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. The ski and snowboard community is small and feels like family, so I can still feel at home with a great group of people across the world, experiencing different cultures at the same time.
I have found that the key to get the opportunity to travel as a photographer is to really focus on specific places and stories you would like to capture as goals you’d like to achieve. Don’t focus on buying the best gear, find what inspires you and make it happen.
