Sky Brown is from Miyazaki, Japan and at 8-years-old, she’s currently the youngest pro skateboarder in the world. What’s amazing about Sky, though, is not just her ability – she’s apparently pulled tricks that no other female has—but her passion for using her board as a vehicle for change.
Recently, Sky took a skate trip to Cuba, and became a three-foot ambassador of stoke, connecting with locals there and even teaching a few how to skate.
Here’s what Sky’s parents said about the experience in the video description:
Sky skating through Cuba ??. Cuban People are living in REAL poverty with barely the means to survive, it’s heartbreaking to see. ? I’m so proud to see Sky just reach out, and embrace the people there. And I was shocked by how much the children opened up their hearts to Sky. It was really hard for Sky to walk away from this one little girl at the end…? I hope she can find her again someday, and maybe bring her more than just a pair of shoes.. The people of Cuba are amazing, so warm and positive.. ???? and the Children are so damn Strong ????Rock on Amazing CUBA✊???. #LetyourSmileschangetheworld ?? #racialequality #peace #equality #hope #empathy.
This trip to Cuba wasn’t the first time Sky has used her skateboard for good. Apparently she asked her family to help her use skating to connect with others in lieu of Christmas presents.
Sky and her family have created a campaign on FundRazr called Skating for Change, to raise funds to travel and connect with children, especially young girls, in low income areas around the world in places like Australia, Africa, Afghanistan, and Palestine.
“My first mission is to connect, talk and skate with children in very low income areas around LA,” she says. “I hope to inspire them with skateboarding and show them that whatever their dreams are, if they do there best then anything is possible.
“I know that kids relate to kids, and I really want to connect and make friends and hopefully inspire other children through Skateboarding. I believe that being 8 years old makes it way easier for other kids to relate to me. I also hope to encourage kids to stay in school. and most of all realize that they are special and can do anything that they Dream.”
Hard to believe she’s the same age as most second graders.
