The Alps can be an unforgiving place. Make one mistake in the European high country and things get real, fast. And in Europe, mountain culture is ingrained into the lifestyles of many people living near this beast of a mountain range. Subsequently, many enthusiasts get in over their heads. Enter, Air Zermatt, arguably the world’s best aerial search and rescue team based in Switzerland. This highly-skilled team of guides, pilots and first responders patrol this unforgiving landscape, with the Matterhorn as a centerpiece, performing an estimated 1,700 rescues a year. This week, Red Bull launched a reality series that follows this skilled mountain team in their day-to-day lives. “The Horn’s” Sam Summermatter and Simon Anthamatten joined The Inertia in our Venice, Calif. offices to talk about life in the pressure cooker of alpine rescue.
