The Inertia

We all get antsy waiting for snow. That first day of the season creates as much anticipation as Christmas morning — more so for the hardcore powder hounds of the world.

The freestyle crowd, on the other hand, who froth no less than those who crave armpit-deep powder days, have at least one advantage in the offseason. They can still find ways to lock into some bindings and send it even without snow. Finland’s Valio Academy took the whole offseason program to a new level, testing Newton’s Laws of Physics with a few dumbbells and, naturally, some skis.

In 1687 physicist Isaac Newton’s The Principia set the foundations for classical mechanics: Newton’s laws of motion.

(1) that a body remains in its state of rest unless it is compelled to change that state by a force impressed on it; (2) that the change of motion (the change of velocity times the mass of the body) is proportional to the force impressed; (3) that to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Real Skifi took that interpretation to a new level:

(I) If you forget to set your spin/flip on the takeoff, it’s quite hard to do so midair

(III) But if you happen to have a pair of dumbbells with you in the air and you throw them, the dumbbells will also throw you.

(II) The bigger the dumbbells, the more you spin/flip.
